Do you ever wonder if girls really do talk earlier than boys? Or if when grandma says using a pacifier will create speech problems later, you should believe her?
Autism is a developmental disability that causes problems with social skills and communication. Autism can be mild or severe, and not all behaviors will exist in every child. Some individuals on the autism spectrum do not speak, while others love to talk but have difficulty with conversational speech and/or understanding the nuances of language and nonverbal cues when talking to others.
In speech apraxia, children do not have any damage to the muscles of their face, mouth, tongue, or lips, but still have trouble communicating with words and language. Sometimes people with acquired speech apraxia (mostly adults) will spontaneously recover on their own. This, however, is not the case for children. Children need treatment to help them learn to effectively communicate.
